A high-schooler's surreal journey into the heart of contemporary America, via its strange sects and cults. Cannes 2023.
Lillian (Talia Ryder), a New Jersey high-schooler, bails from a class trip to Washington D.C. and falls in with the first of several groups that try to win her to their causes. Her trip down the rabbithole passes through an independent film shoot with Jacob Elordi, the home of an Edgar Allen Poe scholar (Simon Rex) with retrograde politics, and a whirlwind trip to New York City (where she encounters a duo of filmmakers, played by Ayo Edebiri and Jeremy O. Harris). The debut feature from acclaimed cinematographer Sean Price Williams (Good Time, Her Smell, Funny Pages), penned by critic Nick Pinkerton, is hilarious and reflective in equal measure, a film that mocks our contemporary moment by always giving its characters enough rope.
